The City star Whitney Port chats about her most embarrassing fashion moment, her summer playlist, and the wrap-up of The Hills, the TV show that launched her career.

If you weren't working in fashion, what would you be doing?
I'd be a ballerina. I always danced growing up and still love to take classes here and there. nd the wrap-up of The Hills, the TV show that launched her career.

Is there a fashion faux pas that still haunts you?
I came to work at Teen Vogue with cowboy boots and this baby-pink paisley dress. it was like Little House on the Prairie meets urban cowboy.
Who are your style icons?
Brigitte Bardot, Princess Diana, and Valentino.
What was the hardest part about breaking into the fashion industry?
Being able to accept the constructive criticism. It can be really difficult to swallow your pride and allow yourself to be vulnerable.
Where do you find most of your inspiration as a designer?
I'm constantly taking pictures of people walking around New York City and in all the places I travel to. I look at what they're wearing and translate it into my own aesthetic.
What trend are you excited to rock this season?
I'm really into the lacy lingerie look—it's really fun to pair with harder metal accessories.
What is your favorite Summer day music?
I love Jack Johnson—he's a great one to put on at the beach.
What is your ideal first date?
I find it really awkward to go to dinner on a first date. I like to go to a comfortable, loungy place or do something fun, like bowling or a concert.
Do you remember the best advice you've ever received?
Diane von Furstenberg told me to empower myself in any life decision I make and never rely on anyone else to make it for me.
How do you feel about The Hills coming to an end?
At first, I really didn't care. But now when I think of how it propelled me into the fashion industry, I'm a little bit sad. It's good that they're finishing on a high note—depending on what you consider a high note.
