'Hills' Star Stephanie Pratt's Animal Past: I Had a Rat!

At first glance, you wouldn't guess that Stephanie Pratt is a serious animal lover. As Spencer Pratt's totally SoCal sis on MTV's The Hills, returning Sept. 29, she fills the role of tanned and toned confidante and shopaholic to a T. But beneath that fashion-focused faade is a girl who grew up taking care of everything from a rat afflicted by a brain tumor to a dog she found shaking under a car. PEOPLE Pets recently spoke to the reality star (and mom to 1-year-old rescue, Charlie, above) about the animals that have changed her life.
Puppies and horses and rats, oh my! "I had every single type of animal growing up," Pratt tells PEOPLE Pets. "I had a guinea pig, and even got a horse for Christmas once." Perhaps the most surprising pet? A rat! "Unfortunately, my rat didn't live long," recalls Pratt. "She had a brain tumor, so my mom and I would give her medicine three times daily, just trying to save her. My whole family truly loves animals."
But the creature that influenced Pratt's life the most had to be her family's rescue dog, Kiki. "I found her under a car one rainy night — she was just a beaten-up, hairless little thing," she says. "We took her straight to the animal hospital, and the doctors didn't know if she'd make it. We picked her up a few days later, and now she's this healthy little terrier mix who completely bounced back." The Pratt family also owns golden retriever Chance, who is "best friends" with Kiki. "Chance is huge," says Pratt, "but he plays with her with his big paws so gently."
Rescue operation. Pratt credits her mom with instilling a love for animals in both her and Spencer at a young age. But one particular experience about a year and a half ago truly brought the three of them together. "There were these homeless feral cats that would come by our parents' house," Pratt recalls. "So my mom started putting food out. Eventually one of the cats had babies, and then more and more — we were literally feeding a multiplying family. Some would come back for the food every day, but some didn't, and it was devastating, because we knew we were losing kittens."
Pratt knew they had to break the cycle. So after asking a family friend for advice, her mother humanely trapped all the remaining cats, took them to an animal hospital and had them fixed. Some found homes, but others still hang around the house. "It's still a sad situation, but we take care of them as best we can," says Pratt. "When my parents are out of town, Spencer and I make a schedule of who will stop by the house to feed the cats. We've both become really attached to them."
New puppy love. Though she's had a hand in raising all her family's other pets, Pratt is now mom to a dog of her own, Charlie. A rescue mix she took in last year, the little guy just turned 1, and celebrated with doggie cookies! "I've tried to get him on The Hills," says Pratt. "But he's too rambunctious, and not potty-trained. So he hangs out with the crew when I'm filming."
Pratt's pup is still in that "chew-everything" phase of puppyhood. "He loves stuffed animals! And hangers too," she says. "He did actually hide one of my Converse sneakers a month ago, and to this day I have not found it." Despite his flaws, Pratt says having her puppy around is worth the work. "He's just so loving. I feel so lucky to have him in my life.

'The Hills' Lo Bosworth Goes on The Record About Reading To Kids

Lo Bosworth, star of MTV series "The Hills," wants you to read to your kids. And maybe some other kids, too. After all, that's what she's doing.
The BFF of "Hills" alpha femme Lauren Conrad is once again joining Jumpstart in promoting its Read for the Record campaign after a successful run last year. The early literacy organization is hoping to break a record by having 1 million children read the same book on the same day. The book? A CC fave, Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." The date: Oct. 8, 2009.
Lo was on hand today to chat with me at Hollywood and Highland's American Eagle store before signing copies of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."
She talked with me about how involved her parents were with reading to her and how it has positively affected every part of her life. Having a mom who was a teacher herself also might have given her a head start.
"Growing up, my mom would take me to the library every week," she said. "And I loved the library. There was no kicking and screaming on the way there."
That, she added, helped encourage her love of reading, which in turn helped her to excel in school.
"It has helped me throughout my life, and there's no reason for me not to want to give that gift back to children in my own community."
Part of that giving back involves her going into Kindergarten through third-grade classes to read to kids.
"The funniest thing is the patterns that you see (with the kids)," Lo said. "They know the story themselves. You read it to them, and they'll read along with you, or they'll scream the word at the end of the page because they know it's coming. So it's really interesting to see those kinds of patterns the more time you spend with children."
Sounds like she knows her stuff. That's exactly how kids are.
So will MTV be airing her good works on upcoming episodes of "The Hills"?
"No, it's not on the show. I wish," Lo said. "They love, you know, drama and boys and fights and stuff. More than calm reading to children."
"No, this is the organization that I feel most strongly about," she added. "It's really close to my heart. But everybody on the show has something that they're passionate about."

Some of Lo's favorite children's books:
"Green Eggs and Ham," by Dr. Seuss
"The Berenstain Bears" series, by Stan and Jan Berenstain
"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett (Yes, she's going to see the upcoming movie.)
"Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak (Kids ask her to read this book the most, she said.)

Heidi Montag Pratt and Spencer Pratt at The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood 9/2

Making the most of a beautiful humpday, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag were spotted hanging out by the pool at the Roosevelt Hotel yesterday (September 2).
The “Hills” lovers looked a bit silly as Pratt donned a crown and held a scepter as a symbol of his intention to change his name to King Spencer Pratt.
Unembarrassed by her hubby’s behavior, Heidi just stood by and smiled for the paparazzi, looking cute in a wispy white top with denim shorts and sandals.
Speidi did a quick interview before dismissing the shutterbugs, all the while accompanied by their personal security team.

Audrina Patridge is No Pushover

The Hills producers may have tried to portray Audrina Patridge as a vapid airhead, but Audrina is no pushover. She's reportedly determined not to let that happen on her new Kardashians-esque reality show about her and her siblings. Insiders say she's insisting on getting a producer credit on The Audrina Show so she's not edited as she was on The Hills.

Did Audrina Patridge apologize to Heidi Montag Pratt?

Acoording to Perez Hilton, yes!

Well, we exclusively got our hands on a little email, which according to Heidi herself, was sent from Audrina, apologizing for her "misconstrued" comments.

Audrina writes:
"Hi Heidi,
I want to apologize for what seems like a very negative comment that I made about you over the weekend. It was taken entirely out of context and twisted completely. I would NEVER speak like that about you to the press, and I’m actually truly impressed with your performance and all of the hard work that you’ve put towards your career. Not that it matters at this point because the press have taken it to another level, but I was at a press junket and the journalist asked me if I could sing…I laughed and said that I was NO Mariah Carey. They asked me what I thought about your performance and I told them I knew you were having a blast and working very hard and that you had an amazing opportunity to perform on TV in front of a huge audience. The journalist asked me if I would ever do a record, and I laughed it off and said something along the lines of 'no, I think I’d offend people in the industry who can really sing.' It was NEVER intended to be a jab towards you – I was talking about my own lack of vocal skills. Ugh. I’m so sorry."

How nice. We guess with Kristin Cavallari running the show over on The Hills now, these b*tches know that you've got to keep your friends close and your frienemies closer.
Plus, as a general rule, its best not to do things that could potentially piss off his highness, King Spencer Pratt, for obvious reasons.

Inside Brody Jenner's Birthday Bash

Brody Jenner spent his actual 26th birthday – Aug. 21 – in the hospital, so on Tuesday the Hills star threw himself a belated celebration at brand-new L.A. club Mi-6. Jenner and his guests – including best pal Frankie Delgado and, briefly, stepsister Khloe Kardashian – took over an upstairs table, where the reality star bounced up and down to live performances by rapper Too $hort and Dirt Nasty (a.k.a. actor Simon Rex). Jenner was loving the musical attention, especially as the acts would call out his name during their songs, and also perked up when waitresses brought over vodka, champagne, sparklers and a cake while the entire club treated him to a "Happy Birthday" serenade.
Afterwards Brody hopped on a party bus, headed to an afterhours club and tried to duck the cameras.
