Lauren Conrad's New Reality Show Has Been CANCELLED!

Last fall, MTV announced that it was reuniting with Lauren Conrad, star of the network’s Laguna Beach and The Hills, for another reality series focused on the young star’s burgeoning fashion line. But EW has EXCLUSIVELY learned why the Conrad series has been passed on by the network. “We decided not to go ahead with the show,” says David Janollari, EVP, Head of Programming for MTV. “She did do a pilot. There were talks about whether we could somehow manage to put together a special based on that footage but that’s also a big question mark based on her interest in that and the finances. We love her! We would love her on our network!” The proposed series was not a glossy reality soap like The Hills but much more documentary style. It was also noticeably absent from MTV’s Upfront this week. Says Janollari, “It was a great attempt but it just didn’t feel like a perfect fit for us now.” (The news of Conrad’s show not moving forward was first reported by blogger Rob Owen.)
UPDATE Lauren Conrad has sent EW a statement regarding MTV’s decision: “We sold a show to MTV, filmed it and are really proud of the final result. MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life. We agreed going into the project that this show would be an aspirational one, focusing on my career and my goals and not my personal relationships. We delivered the show that we sold and are sorry MTV didn’t feel their viewers were savvy enough to appreciate it.”
There aren't enough words to begin describe how annoyed and disappointed I am. I can't believe there is a pilot out there that we will never get to see! : ( I really hope another network swoops in and saves the day.

  1. mtv airs teen moms and other crap like that but they cancel lauren's show! how does that make sense? :<(

  2. I'm bummed but good for Lauren for sticking to her guns when mtv tried to pull a fast one. It sounds like they wanted her to film a lot of her personal life for ratings which is not what she signed up for!

  3. I am so disappointed too and hope that some other network picks it up. Someone would be stupid not to.

I guess MTV wants to stick with the controversial crap, i.e. watching people make train wrecks out of their lives. Yeah, Jersey Shore was funny for a while but it's disgusting to see how much money these talentless people are raking in. There needs to be a balance of young people who make good choices and are actually doing something with their lives. What is the cast of Jersey shore's claim to fame? Getting drunk, being disrespectful of the opposite sex, cheating, aggressively acting out? A show like Lauren's would expand their audience.

In the end, Lauren will will out. Being on a MTV show again would definitely hinge on her privacy again. I am so glad that she stood her ground. Things work out for the best and she always seems to land on her feet.

  4. Oh no, I was looking forward to it. I guess its give and take. They were hoping to get something more personal so the audience could relate! She could have stuck her family, lo and stef in one or two episodes, as she is still friends with them. She could have agreed to talk about Kyle but he would not have been filmed. But if she said no in the beginning MTV should have honoured the agreement. They must of thought once she was on board they could change her mind as they did for Spencer and Heidi's wedding. MTV must have been hoping it would be like the drama in The Hills but it may have been a bit boring like The City. I guess we might never know now! She must me pis***

  5. MTV's loss. I guess they only want shows if you're young and pregnant or getting drunk on a daily basis like the Jersey Shore lot.

I hope Lauren's pilot gets picked up by E or the Style Network. MTV always seemed like a strange fit for her new venture.

  6. I agree. The Style Network or E! should at least pick it up.

  7. I agree with the above.. hopefully E! or even Lifestyle pick it up.. they air Kel on Earth and Rachel Zoe and LC's show sounds like it is along th same vein... finger's crossed!

  8. Doesn't Bravo air the RZ show and Kel on Earth? I really don't care what network picks it up as long as it airs somewhere!

  9. Ughhhhhhh, first The City, now this? MTV is pissing me off! This makes perfect sense why The City ended in the first place. They think people would rather watch others getting pregnant and getting drunk than seeing intelligent young men and women make it in their respect careers, or in this case & The City, fashion. Ugh, I'm just done with this whole marlarkey!

  10. Wow. MTV are such a**holes. First, they basically just called their viewers stupid. Second, they are just trying to trick her to show more of her personal life again, which she has said she absolutely would not do. I mean, they knew she would not agree to show any of her personal life, and they tried to tell her they would air the show if she did just that? What the hell? And I don't like the how people are spinning this story online saying Lauren is ungrateful to MTV for her career, which she is not. It's just an insult to her that they would not pick up the show just because they think it's too "high brow" for their viewers. I was actually looking forward to the show. Instead they wanted her to do a sequel to the Hills. I mean, how long before they tried to trick her and bring Heidi into the show somehow?

  11. I'm going to go against the grain here. I kind of wondered what her show would be like. I was predicting kinda boring. I would watch because I loved Laguna Beach and most of the Hills. Rachel Zoe's show is okay, but she does include a lot of her personal life (her husband, father, etc are on a lot) and there is the drama surrounding the celebrity fittings. So, anywho, I guess I'm not all that surprised.

  12. That's such a bummer!!! I was really looking forward to her new show...it was so nice to see her grow into the person she has become and that's why I would have loved to see a little more of her professional life. I would definitely watch her new show - so pleeeeeaaaaase E! pick it up!!!! This is a huge loss for MTV....shame on the new management!

  16. MTV seems to be about getting drunk, hooking up, and fighting. Have you seen the trailer for the new Real World? LC has too much class for the MTV of 2011.

Bravo or E! or Style would be a much better fit. I think LC has grown up and away from MTV. Also, Rachel Zoe's husband is a good part of the show because he's involved in the business. LC's show should focus on her work and the relationships with the people and friends involved in that business.

  17. Actually for the entire first season rachel zoe's husband was not a part of her business but he was on the show a lot. Attending fashion shows with her etc. And a lot of the storylines surrounded him still. He became involved in her business at the end of 2nd season when they suspected that girl assistant was doing shady things with the books. Anyway, I do want to see LC's show still but I'm just not surprised.

  18. Interesting how MTV announce no show for Lauren, then a few hours later Audrina tweets this- "Can't wait for you guys to see the promos for my new show!!!". I hope this was just a coincidence and Audrina was not trying to rub it in.

  20. I can't stand this. I love Lauren and i was so exited for the show. Only MTV is gonna loose for this one!

Hope she finds another one that can send it!

  21. Please help us and Lauren to change MTV's minds and make them transmit Lauren Conrad's show.
MTV chose not publish her new show because it didn't contain her personal and private life.
We started this campaign in the hope of making it on screen.

  22. Wow. Shame on MTV for trying to swindle Lauren.
Don't know whether the show would have been a hit or not but def would have tuned in to see.
Hope another network picks it up.
Also surprised they let The City go.
    That was a good show.
They could have kept it and still had the other nonsense they show. Too bad for the viewers.

  23. that really sucks! I hope it gets picked up by another network!

  24. I agree that she's too classy for MTV. MTV had a chance to redeem their lineup but decided to stick to trashy train wreck TV. Lauren belongs on a better network! Hopefully she hasn't burned too many bridges and someone picks it up very soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Burning bridges and Lauren Conrad don't go in the same sentence. What other bridges has she burned?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 10:08 I'm sure Lauren's comment about the viewers not being savvy enough was a direct quote from MTV. She's disappointed and that reflects in her statement. I don't think she's burnt any bridges and as a fan I respect her for keeping it real. I'm sure she feels awful about the situation and wanted her fans to know this was MTV's choice and not hers.

  27. Sorry Daniel, that was not probably not the best choice of words. I was referring to the fact that networks were supposedly "fighting" over her show. Hopefully they didn't have hurt feelings over her choosing MTV over them and will still consider airing her show.
